Contest 3 entries: 1 2 3 4 (~25 people) 5 6 7 (29 people) 8 9 10
Illegitimate entries: 1 (not all participants "in frame") 2 (not > 70% "on topic," I feel) 3 (not all participants "in frame" at relevant moment) 4 (not > 70% "on topic," I feel) 5 (uses obvious "gimmick," to a large degree, I feel)
Prizes: $800, "'special' galley," my "private" coin collection, [other things] (see below). Free books: every "legitimate-seeming" entry gets 1 of my books free, email binky.tabby [at] gmail which book & your address if your entry is above. Submission process: post your entry on the internet, comment the link in this post's comments section.
CONTEST 1: TYPE OR "GMAIL CHAT" ABOUT "RICHARD YATES" &/OR "TAO LIN"
For this post "legitimate" is defined as "more than ~70% 'on topic' and w/o obvious 'gimmicks' like pasting the same sentence repeatedly, quoting 1k-word sections of other essays, having 30+ second 'silent' shots of landscapes, Photoshop'ing into a movie '1k people turning their bodies to look at a person,' [other things of this nature]." People I know or "are friends w/" can participate, as the judging seems "objective," to a large degree, I feel, for the above contests. Motivated people can submit entries in each contest to receive 3 free books, but not more than one entry per contest. "On topic" is defined as "about 'Richard Yates' (novel) &/or 'Tao Lin.'" I feel "flexible" re [things in this paragraph].
"3x contest" ends Aug 3, Tues, 10PM Eastern. Every entry will be linked at the top of this post. Richard Yates' release date is 7 Sep 2010. Thank you for your time/consideration.
Type 1k+ words or 500+ "Gmail chat lines" about Richard Yates &/or Tao Lin, using as reference: internet, official site, HTMLGIANT review/coverage of this post, Alt Report, Fishkind review, author description, Justin Taylor, [coverage "generated" by this post, listed above].CONTEST 2: FILM AN INTERVIEW/DISCUSSION ABOUT "RICHARD YATES" &/OR "TAO LIN"
The longest "legitimate-seeming" entry gets: $250 check + "'special' galley"/"box of drafts" ("longest" = "largest word-count," "1 Gmail chat line" = "2 words," if you promote your entry and it's linked by a site, or is already on "such a site," w/ an Alexa "traffic rank" below 50k your "prize-length" will be increased by 25%.
Tips: seems "easier" maybe if you title sections of your "piece" in this manner, each title being a topic/[link] that you then "muse upon." Entries do not need to be positive, if you "hate me" and want a free book "feel free" to "shit out" an essay in ~10 minutes "shit-talking" me in a cathartic, stream-of-consciousness manner.
Film a "live, 2+ minute" interview about Richard Yates &/or Tao Lin using things listed in "contest 1"/[anything] as reference, w/ the person being interviewed "in frame" while speaking. To increase the "prize-length" of the movie you can "upgrade" the interview into a "discussion" (3+ people; see next paragraph).CONTEST 3: FILM A PERSON SAYING "RICHARD YATES" IN A MANNER CAUSING 3+ PEOPLE TO TURN THEIR BODIES, TO SOME DEGREE, TO LOOK AT [AFOREMENTIONED PERSON]
The longest "legitimate-seeming" entry gets: $250 check + "coin collection"/"box of drafts" ("longest" = "lengthiest movie," w/ each person beyond 2 who speaks, legitimately, in the movie, increasing the "prize-length" of the movie by 1 minute; for example a "round-table"/"panel discussion" of 7 people, where each person is "in frame" throughout and has "a 'legitimate' speaking role," will increase the "prize-length" by 5 minutes; "additionally," for every 1k views your movie has before Aug 3 the "prize-length" will be increased by 2 minutes).
Film a movie where 3+ people turn their bodies, to some degree, upon hearing "Richard Yates," to look at the person who said "Richard Yates," w/ all participants "in frame" during the "relevant" portion of the movie (you can have other things in the movie if you want), can be "scripted" (something w/ friends) or non-scripted (saying "Richard Yates" loudly to "strangers" in a public area).OTHER INFORMATION
The movie where the most people "turn around" in the above manner gets: $300 check + [package of "random ass shit" from my room, guaranteed to probably be worth ~$200-$5k in ~2025 to NYU's "head archivist"].

@harryjfoster yes

whassup!
YES
i sent you something yest. in the mail
Tao,
If I do Contest 1 and make ~50% about Richard Yates and related buzz and ~49% your writing style/common motifs/possible motivations for writing and ~1% accidental ramblings and overuse of the word "which," would that qualify as being ~70% on topic?
Random fun fact:
I am related to the person who is the face on the Indian head penny.
Maybe you can make that a 'selling point' for your contest?
@adam sweet
@sean yes
@matthew is it on the internet somewhere, the graph that shows this is true
Not sure if there is an online family tree that shows the link from Longacre to Simmons, but my folks discovered it at some point.
The story of Sarah's face on the penny is recounted here.
It's actually quite controversial.
feel like rob horning will write a much better version of what i'll write. guy is kind of ruining my life/confidence
my review is ~1100 words. is it eligible for contest 1...
@matthew i will 'peruse' that link soon
@david no, you would 'need to' write 1000 more words for the prize
seems like i'm 'already done' making the video for contest #3. also, seems like i may be 'instantly disqualified'
Am I the first entry for 'Contest 1'
I am very honored

hey tao. am i/'we' able to scream richard yates in multiple locations and sting them together in a vid, is there any additional value to that
@shannon hm, no, but seems like a good idea, if i was making the contest now i would allow that
gonna do that but do not mind if it is not an extra value (meal)

lol re 'my lonely journal'
i like the part in the 'my lonely journal' post where they mentioned the other person's gmail chat status, which 'somehow'/coincidentally happened to be an 'eeeee eee eeee' reference. sort of seemed like they 'knew what they were doing' despite the fact that they purportedly have not read the book. felt like i was watching a movie where i 'knew something' that the character(s) did not.

1001 words
this is not about the contest specifically, but i was thinking about something and wanted to pose the question somewhere for you, tao.
you have written online--explicitly in the comments to your rumpus interview, and maybe implicitly elsewhere--about your feelings toward people who refer to 'tao lin imitators,' and you have expressed that you disagree with/dislike that assessment.
but on your richard yates website, you quote--as the highest quote on your list--clancy martin making that same assessment, which praises you, but 'at the cost of' dismissing the rest of this online writing community as a 'huge school of Lin imitators.'
i imagine that you must have 'weighed,' 'in your head,' the benefits of using a blurb from clancy martin versus 'staying true to your bros' and other things like that/not willingly spreading the idea that others in this community can be appropriately dismissed as imitators of you.
if you were 'indeed' conscious of these issues and did 'weigh' this, or something, why did you choose to 'proceed' to use/promote the clancy martin blurb and the understanding it represents? would it be correct to interpret this choice of yours as 'merely' self interest and betrayal of 'bros in this writing community and beyond'? if not, why/how do you understand it differently?
fun! amaze@!

hello tao. I made a video for you! It applies to contest no. 3. I took it with a cell phone, so I hope you don't mind the size/quality.
Here is the Link via my tumblr
attempted contest 3, overall i feel it was 'very difficult'. first i think i yelled it 5-6 times in maybe 3 different outdoor locations, each time either less than 3 people looked, or if 3 or more people looked they were not all in the frame at the same time. at some point i went into borders and looked in the 'literature' section to find books by richard yates. when i found books by richard yates i picked up all of them that were in the store (i was holding maybe 5 in one hand and 6 in the other, some multiple copies of maybe 5 different books) and looked at a person that worked at borders and said something like 'will i get kicked out/in trouble for yelling', she said something like 'i wont get you in trouble but i can ask my manager before you do it'. at a point that was maybe 'in the middle' of her sentence i think (cant remember exactly), i walked toward the 'main area'. there were 11-15 people in the 'main area', i yelled 'richard yates' about 3 times in slightly different areas, each time either no one looked or 2 people looked, at the most. after this i yelled richard yates maybe 8 more times in various outdoor locations, each time 1 or 2 people who were 'in frame' looked in my direction. at one point a person said 'no my name is [the person's name]'. i couldnt really tell if they 'seriously' thought i was calling them 'richard yates' or if they were 'trying to be funny' or something. i feel like i 'fully understand' why no one (so far) has entered a video for contest 3.

thanks a lot Tao!
SO EXCITING MY BOOK ARRIVED. THANKS TAO LIN! THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU.
is brian mcelmurry’s entry really 70% on topic?
it seems >50% off topic
Well, as the author of an essay about a novel called 'Richard Yates' that's not about 'Richard Yates', I really find the idea of 'topic' very subjective. The point of my story is the 'What the fuck?' factor of Tao Lin and this contest. He has things in his writing and 'internet presence', which the reader cannot clearly make-out, and it seems intentional. Following my 'thesis sentence' of postmodern art causing reflection of the reader’s/viewer’s life, I took themes from the book and 'mused' upon them. A major theme of the novel is balancing your self and your relationship, and my rapid 'telling' of my days while I was trying to write the essay, represents that. Also it parodies ‘Eeeee Eee Eeee’ in the rapid 'telling' of some of the characters. And I segued into each 'musing' from Tao Lin’s list of references, as the 'spanking' segment has to do with the fact that I like women with hips, not 16 years old without hips--thus making 'spanking' highly relevant to the novels ‘illicit love affair.’
Thanks for reading @yeti
on topic clearly refers to about Richard Yates and/or Tao Lin.
your musing become significantly distant from these themes, no?
can a facebook chat substitute a gmail chat?
@yeti
Let's quote the website:
"For this blog post "legitimate" is defined as "more than ~70% 'on topic' and w/o obvious 'gimmicks' like pasting the same sentence repeatedly, quoting 1000-word sections of other essays."
Clearly this isn't clear, as denoted by the quotation marks around 'on topic.' But we don't need to agree as to the subjectivity of our own realities. Maybe you view things more black and white, and myself more shades of grey. Maybe I'm biased and blinded by cold hard cash. Either way, I've enjoyed myself.
On a side note, my fifty year old-coworker was surfing the internet and just asked me, "Is Lady Gaga a man?"
I laughed, "No, but she's a little drag queen-ish."
also, would both participants get a free book?
@curt 2x yes
contest entry 1: http://dostoevskyxlin.blogspot.com/

~202,000 words, all directly about tao lin
@yeti
it would be funny if tao decided your ~202,000 word story wasn't a legitimate entry. good work on writing so much.
i have really enjoyed this competion. I hope you (toa lin) will continue to do these 'contests', although, admittedly, it will be a lot harder to choose who gets linked as you get more well known. I'm just glad i joined in early. There's been such a friendly/literary/sarcastic/stupidly funny/[anything you want to add] vibe about the whole thing
thanks tao

-Haley Joel Osment's early career
-Richard Yates cover art
-Brandon Scott Gorrell short story contest controversy
-Tao Lin Iron Chef vegan pizza showdown

-Tao Lin w/ beard
-Tao Lin w/ free-range cow
-Tao Lin w/ glock

~3000 words (probably closer to like 1500 without the footnotes). I used sources other than the ones you posted, because I wanted to give a kind of "comprehensive overview"/"adequate introduction" to your prose. Enjoy.
I have also posted the same essay here in case you wanted it on a blog instead or something:
http://sean-face.blogspot.com/2010/08/who-hell-is-tao-lin-anyway.html
fucking bullshit
tao lin all the words were added before the 10pm deadline
there are no rules against lengthening your essay
i mean: jesus
hi adam
good job on the gigantic essay
i feel that the 'rule' stating that one person can submit one time to each contest was made so that people couldn't submit things again after seeing someone else's 'word count'/'video length'
when your entry was submitted earlier, i felt that the word count was, like, 'recorded,' at that moment, as your one entry for contest 1
and i feel that adding words to it is like submitting again
i hope that is okay, what do you think?
i don't think that was clear.
i am worried that your competition that was supposed to be judges on seemingly objective criteria seems to have you taking a subjective judgement that means the person who loaned you money wins the contest (twice)
i read the rule about submitting once as a way of preventing people from trying to get a library of your books easily.
is resubmission submitting more than one entry?
it does seem very much that at 10pm eastern i had submitted only one entry, no?
@adam i think it makes sense to me that when you submitted yesterday or the day before yesterday your 'word count' was 'logged' at the time i linked your entry via '25'
i viewed the word counts of each entry, at the time of the entry, the time i linked each entry, as the 'official, objective' word count
i think i definitely wanted to make it 'one submission per person' to avoid everyone extending their entries until 10pm to be 1 word more or [whatever] more at 10pm
i foresaw some situation where people continue typing until the last moment, or where people extend their entry after 10pm (and i woudn't know, as i wouldn't be able to copy and paste every entry at 10pm into microsoft word simulatenously to see the word counts)
i apologize that it wasn't clear, i'll reinburse your time spent lengthening the article at $10/hr
but a wordcount wasn't logged at that time.
the essay may not have been quite the length of jordan's but if you give it the +50% then it surely would have surpassed.
alternatively you had judged the essay legit at that time, which would include the 32,000 word gimmick maybe.
i just don't know, maybe i don't get it.
there probably other technicalities that can counteract your technicalities and really it is just you judgement
@adam i agree that a word count wasn't 'logged' at the time, i had 'scanned' the article and deemed it legitimate, and vaguely discerned the article's length, to some degree, feeling that an exact count could be made later, feeling that people would not lengthen their entries to 'beat' pre-existing entries
i didn't see a link to your post on the page you linked (also i don't feel i would feel that the 50% is legitimate, in my view, for this contest, due to the 'rules' stating that one be 'linked by' a site not for one to 'post a link on their site'; going to 'correct' this re dan's entry)
using my discretion as to what seems to me legitimate and what seems to me not legitimate and [other things], as forewarned in the contest's rules, i decided via [things said in previous two comments] that jordan was the objective winner of contest 1
since you felt the rules were not clear, and still felt this way after reading my reasoning, and because there is no contest fee to refund to you, i want to reimburse you for your time, email me and i will paypal you
i don't think money solves this.
i think the situation you were trying to avoid (people typing up to the last minute and trying to beat each other with one word) didn't happen.
i don't see any significant difference between what happened and if i had not posted earlier and lengthened the essay in the same way i did and then posted.
i think being objective means looking at what the rules say rather than looking at what you meant them to say
i think i am trapped because i don't even want to win anymore, i am not sure if i even have a goal to this
@adam it was stated that each person can submit only one time for each contest
you submitted, and your submission was accepted
later you submitted again, in my view
an analogy would be a 'mail in contest'
if you mailed in your submission you would not be able to change it once you mailed it in
the judging of this contest was, i felt, and stated in the blog post, 'objective, to a large degree,' but not fully objective, because i foresaw that some people might have disputes with me in how i view things
i stated that my definition of 'legitimate' would include [other things of this nature]
in my view you saw that someone had a certain word count, and then you lengthened your entry to 'beat' that entry, near the deadline, and then submitted again
[see above analogy re 'mail in submission']
i'm going to sleep now, you can email me to be reimbursed if you want
damn
i agree that my 'links' were 100% bullshit
also: not surprised re: jordan castro re: the way brandon's contest ended.
also also: it was obvious to me that the word count was 'fixed' @ time of submission.
This is late, but doesn't matter, we didn't do it for the books:

@tao
am i right in thinking that although i had a essay with a longer wordcount that did not contradict the rules of the contest as written
you decided to disallow my entry in favour of your friend?
This comment has been removed by the author.
@adam as stated before your first (and only 'allowed' entry, as stated in the 'rules') was not longer than jordan's entry
your second entry (only one entry per person is allowed per contest, to in part avoid specifically this situation, was longer than jordan's entry
submitting more than one time is not allowed, as stated in the blog post
but because you still feel that you should have won i have offered to reimburse you for your time, and all entries also get a free book, you can email me if you want those
@tao
i)
the rule state:
“Motivated people can submit entries in each contest to receive 3 free books, but cannot submit more than one entry for each contest.”
the context of this sentence is the maximum number of books it is possible to get by entering the competition.
it seems clear that you cannot submit more than one entry refers to submitting more than one entry into the same contest to gain more than one book.
ii)
at no single point in time did i have more than one entry into the competition.
at the deadline of the competition i only had one entry into the competition.
if i had spotted a typo before the deadline and corrected it then would i have been disqualified because i changed my essay?
when you wrote Richard Yates, did you write > 1 million different books?
everytime you added a letter did you consider those to be distinctly separate novels?
do you think that if you added a few sentences you could submit Richard Yates + a few sentences to another publisher and they would be happy with it?
you did not say that submission to the contest is essentially the deadline for one’s entry.
iii)
when people questioned you about the Brandon scott gorrell story contest you said:
“seems like people 'trade' ideas or drafts or sentences or things often, i've done it before, and it seems accepted conventionally even.'
to me it seems like people edit and amend their ideas, drafts or sentences and things (including essays) often. i’ve done it and it seems accepted conventionally even.
iv)
to me there are obvious ways that you could have run the competition so that people did not know each other’s wordcounts and were not able to edit, change or extend their entries.
you did not do this.
v)
submitting more than one time is not disallowed in the blog post.
submitting more than one entry is.
someone submitted the same entry twice and you did not have a problem with that
vi)
the only part of the rules which make your decision valid is the clause that you feel flexible about the rules of the contest.
your flexibility leaned towards your friend it seems
"when you wrote Richard Yates, did you write > 1 million different books?"
The difference is that when Tao published Richard Yates, it's the 1st edition/1st publication/1st "entry." If Tao passed off a 2nd edition as a 1st edition, then he'd be doing the same thing you are.
"someone submitted the same entry twice and you did not have a problem with that"
If you're referring to me, I'm only getting credit for my first entry.
@sean
i am question what is conceptually considered versions of the same writing.
i consider tao's final published richard yates to be comparable to my 'final' entry: the entry at the time of the deadline.
there exists a draft and editing stage.
i meant that although you had entries in different places it was clear that there was only one entry.
in the same way, there may have existed different versions of my essay at different times, but it is clear there is only one essay.
On my iPhone in park
Adam, if I submitted my book to my publisher and they published it (linked it) and then I added 30000 words to it because another book was published that was longer than my book and I wanted to have the longest book they wouldn't publish it again I think
You did the submission process as stated in the blog post then you pasted the link two more times
When you completed the submission process and I linked your entry I viewed that entry at that moment as your one entry
If people could continue adding words until the deadline I wouldn't be able to discern the winner because I think it's impossible for me to check word count of every entry at the oment of the deadline I think
I viewed in part you adding words as a 'gimmick' and also fully as it being a second entry
Kiser my judgment as I said I would and felt strongly that Jordan was the winner
I don't want to comment anymore on this, email me to be reimbursed for your time and for your free book if you want
"there exists a draft and editing stage."
It seems that you would only publish an essay after having gone through a draft and editing stage.
As in, I don't believe that your publishing your first essay (Mon. 7:06 PM) was part of the "draft and editing stage."
Anyway, this is ultimately Tao's decision, and I suppose my opinion is not really relevant.
I'm always too late for things.
This looks like it was a fun contest Tao.
I hope you continue to host these.
@nobody
tao lin accepted my lonely journal's tao lin gchat v2
it is a gchat that has clearly been extended.
this was before i had entered the competition.
it sets an undeniable precedent: that it was acceptable to extend one's entry
Damn. I feel a low-level shitstorm brewing. I feel it in my boners. Seems like it will be a quiet, sustained shitstorm, like the whistle of a tiny tea kettle.
